This 1973 Cal 29 is a seaworthy cruiser in excellent condition, for sale in San Diego, California. Priced to sell and ready to sail or live aboard, this Cal 29 came out of the yard two months ago with fresh bottom paint and inspections (May 2023). She has an unusual and capable electric propulsion setup: a near-new WEN 6000W generator feeding a 220V variable-frequency drive and a 5hp three-phase industrial induction motor, direct-drive coupled to the shaft with a traditional stuffing box, giving strong steerage and about 3 knots at full load. As backup, a 2021 10hp Mercury outboard (currently in the shop) carries a transferable West Marine five-year warranty. Sails are in good shape, including a two-year-old heavy-duty North headsail, the original main, and a spare. The electrical system runs solar to a 100Ah battery, also charged whenever the generator is online.
